In the year 2009 about 1 million Americans were estimated to be affected with the swine flu virus. According to the government flu scientists, about six percent of some urban areas in the US were infected with this disease. The swine flu virus was first reported in México and from there it spread to USA, Canada and to some European and Asian countries. The swine flu virus has badly affected USA and till the mid of year 2009, swine flu had hit 1 m in USA alone. The number of swine flu cases in USA was estimated to be half of the total number of swine flu cases of the world. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention about 28000 lab confirmed cases of swine flu were reported in USA out of which 3,065 patients were hospitalized and 127 died because of this disease.

Possibilities behind swine flu hit 1m in USA

There are different reasons behind the continuous increase in the number of swine flu cases in USA. These are :-

The diagnosis period that takes minimum three days after the visibility of flu symptoms
High percentage of population suffering from health problems like asthma, diabetes, weak immune system etc.
Lack of antiviral medicines during flu season.
Unavailability of a satisfactory vaccine.
Incomplete awareness about swine flu virus and the preventive measures for it.

Among the different swine flu cases reported in USA , the average age of hospitalized patient was twenty years and those who died from swine flu had average age of thirty seven years. About two percent of the total died people from swine flu were in the age group of sixty five years and above. Seeing the effects of swine flu the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention
USA has made projection for flu vaccines which can protect people of America both from seasonal flu and swine flu. It was also reported that one in three of the admitted swine flu patients were also suffering asthma, 16 percent had diabetes, 12 percent had immunity problems and 11 percent were additionally suffering from cardiac complications.

Due to the continuous increase, the health officials conducted campaigns at multiple location asking people to get vaccinated and get protected to some extent. Masses were also made aware with the different preventive measures that they can apply in their daily life to get protected from the h1n1 virus. It is also a cause of concern that swine flu has hit almost 1m in USA and the common seasonal flu affects 15 to 60 million people every year, which stands far more in comparison to the 1m figure of swine flu but still swine flu is more dangerous as it affects young ones. The government ordered to produce 143 million doses of vaccine to cover the entire flu season. The American government is also preparing for 2010, so that the third wave of swine flu virus can not be as dangerous as it’s 2009 counterpart.
